Interior design currently revolves around serenity and the Zen-inspired bathroom aligns perfectly with this trend. It’s only natural the bathroom has become a sanctuary for the ultimate escape! We can help you arrange the room in 3, 2, 1…

Create a calm and natural space

The overall goal is to create a cocooning, nature-like ambiance in the space. This includes incorporating an array of indoor plants or dried flowers, of course, but the design style extends far beyond adding some simple greenery.

Focus on soft, enveloping colours that offer a soothing break for the senses: creamy white, sandy beige, pale gray… Earthy tones – hazelnut brown, terracotta and forest green – also create an intimate atmosphere that invite you to decompress. Consider using authentic materials like stone and wood (especially oak and bamboo) to enhance the natural look.

Rest in a therapeutic bathroom

Drawing inspiration from Nordic spas and their hot-cold thermal cycles, a therapeutic bathroom seamlessly complements the increasing emphasis on well-being, one of the key 2025 bathroom trends.

Design a peaceful, calming space that includes a deep bathtub featuring sensuous curves, a multi-jet shower or a sauna. Steam baths (hammam), rain showers and compact saunas are all trending choices right now.

Dress up the walls and floor

The walls and floors are essential elements to consider when creating a Zen atmosphere. Stay true to the minimalist Scandinavian or Japanese aesthetic by installing vertical wood batten siding on an entire wall for an immediate warm and natural effect! For a consistent look, cover the floor with flooring like oak or teal, or ceramic tiles that resemble wood.

Another option is to add an accent backsplash above the vanity, using a contrasting shade to create depth against an adjacent wall. Want to make a statement? Install veined ceramic tile on the wall behind the bathtub.

Choose a vanity

Picking the perfect vanity is a pivotal step in creating a natural bathroom vibe. Solid wood options, particularly in light hues like oak or bamboo, are a top choice.

If you want a more refined look, consider a marble counter with integrated sink. Neutral-coloured veins – dark gray or black – are versatile and easier to match. Alternatively, a waxed concrete vanity top with double basin would add a stylish touch to this interior.

Select a type of storage

Rough-hewn wooden ladders are an imaginative option for hanging towels and bathrobes or displaying other belongings. If you’d rather keep things out of sight, wicker or rattan storage baskets near the vanity offer a stylish solution.

Some prefer a unit with doors and drawers to keep everything organized and uncluttered. Is that your go-to style? Buy a pale wood vanity to enhance the room’s décor.

Say yes to an Italian shower

An Italian shower is defined by its easy walk-in access and simple design. Its generous size provides a feeling of openness while making circulation a breeze.

If you have sufficient space, install a bathtub near the shower. This setup allows you to easily move from one to the other for an immersive relaxation experience. A warm bath followed by a cool shower is a spa-like healing ritual you can recreate in your own home.

Some practical or aesthetic elements can be included in the shower area. Consider a recessed alcove built in the wall to store shampoo and beauty products. This niche can be tiled with a ceramic that matches the shower walls.

A small wooden shelf can also be added inside the shower to hold decorative bottles or a real plant (that would love the humidity!), like an orchid. Just make sure there’s enough sunlight.

Must-have essential accessories

Lighting plays a crucial role in creating a serene atmosphere. Opt for soft, diffused, and subtle lighting to set the mood. Don’t hesitate to place candles on furniture to further enhance the ambiance.

Rattan or bamboo hanging lights, along with wall lights made of wood or frosted glass, are excellent choices. Also consider incorporating backlights into shelves or wall niches.

Plants like lush ferns or succulents add a refreshing touch to help you unwind after a long day.

Lastly, elevate the sensory experience by including essential oil diffusers that subtly scent the air. This accessory should be either ceramic or wood in keeping with the Zen theme.

Think about arranging accessories like toothbrush cups, soap dishes and more in a variety of assorted pots (black or sage green, for example). These will add a coordinated, elegant touch, especially when displayed on open shelves. And don't forget to choose a bathmat in a matching colour to tie the look together.

There are many ways to create a Zen-inspired bathroom. Industrial waxed concrete walls pair interestingly with a pebbled floor, evoking the feel of an Asian garden. Whether you prefer a minimalist approach or want to add a touch of exotic flair—or perhaps a bit of both—the choice is yours!
