Before beginning a house extension project, there are a few things you need to do to. Once you’ve compiled design ideas and mood boards, it’s time to take your ideas to an architect or technologist to draft the plans. And then you’ll need to reach out to compare quotes from reputable home addition builders. Choosing a contractor can be tough – you need to ensure that they have the right experience and knowledge to successfully complete your renovation project.
RenoAssistance has built a network of local home addition contractors. Each has passed our 53-point Verification Process, so you can rest easy knowing that your home extension project is in good hands. An experienced Renovation Advisor will help you every step of the way and get you up to three quotes from local contractors. Just submit your project online or give us a call at 1-888-670-9742.
GST and HST. Any reputable home addition company will be registered and pay applicable taxes. You can ask a contractor for their tax registration number and confirm its validity online. Be sure that it matches the GST/HST number detailed on the invoice(s) you receive from the contractor.
Licences. There are different licence requirements for contractors and businesses in Ontario and Quebec. Not all types of renovation require a licence in Ontario, and industry requirments can vary from city to city. For example, in Toronto, residential or commercial renovation businesses need to have a valid Building Renovators Licence. However, in Quebec, contractors need a licence for the specific type of work they do.
RenoAssistance also checks information that may not be publicly available such as business registration status and financial standing, performs background checks, and reaches out to suppliers. We provide all of this information to our clients in our contractor verification reports at no charge or obligation.
To get an idea of a contractor’s work quality and demeanor, it’s best to reach out to past clients. Ask prospective home addition builders for client references and reach out to them. Of course, they may opt to give you the phone numbers of happy customers, but at least it’s an opportunity to ask specific questions.
Do your own quick background check on the company by looking it up on the Consumer Beware List and Better Business Bureau. Neither provide comprehensive lists, but it does give you a starting point.
Home addition builders generally need to have liability insurance in case something unexpected happens that results in property damage or injury. For a home addition or extension project, ensure that they have at least $1 million in liability coverage. You can ask the contractor to provide a Certificate of Insurance from their broker.
All of our contractors, architects, and engineers meet our strict requirements – we check their status on a regular basis! If you’re ready to get started with your project, call one of our Renovation Advisors at 1-888-670-9742. They’ll be happy to guide you through the renovation process and find you up to 3 Verified Contractors to complete your home addition project.
