Doors are a crucial part of any home. They not only protect the dwelling but also add a unique finish. This applies to all types of doors, including front doors, garage doors and patio doors. But what budget should you set aside for replacing different types of doors? And how do you choose from the wide range of options available on the market?

The team at RenoAssistance has laid out the pros and cons of each option, along with the costs, to help us better plan our renovation or construction project.

Cost of replacing a front door in 2024

Here’s a table showing the approximate costs of a new front door based on popular material types. Prices vary depending on several factors such as the addition of glass, colour, finish, thickness, as well as the number of locks and their quality, among others.

Type of front door

Cost per door (incl. installation)

PVC door (standard) +/- $1320 – $1800
Steel door (standard) +/- $1680 – $1920
Fibre glass door (standard) +/- $1800 – $2280
Wood door (standard) +/- $1920 – $2400
Aluminum door (standard) +/- $2400 – $4200
High-end door +/- $3600 – $5400

PVC front doors

The average cost of a PVC front door is between $1,300 and $1,800.

Pros: PVC has good thermal insulation, which is essential in Canada. It requires little maintenance, is perfectly waterproof and isn’t prone to mould. It offers excellent bang for your buck.

Cons: PVC is flammable and tends to warp more easily than a steel model. Temperature changes do affect its lifespan.

Steel front doors

The price of a steel front door ranges from $1,700 to $1,900.

Pros: This durable material is a popular choice because it’s affordable and requires little maintenance. A galvanized steel door offers good fire protection. It can be reinforced for a higher level of security (burglars, fire). It can also be painted for a personalized look. It has a superior structural load, which allows for a larger door.

Cons: The door is very heavy, especially if it’s reinforced. It must be repaired quickly if scratches happen to prevent damaged areas from rusting. However, deeper damage can’t be fixed. Also worth noting is its energy performance is lower if it has a large glazing.

Composite front doors (fibreglass)

A fibreglass front door costs between $1,800 and $2,300.

Pros: It’s durable and requires minimal maintenance. Unlike wood, it doesn’t absorb moisture. It offers excellent thermal and acoustic insulation, while resisting shocks and scratches. Composite has a nice look thanks to its natural aspect that imitates wood.

Cons: It has a shorter average lifespan.

Wood front doors

The price of a wood front door ranges from $1,900 to $2,400.

Pros: Recognized for its aesthetics, a wooden door can increase the value of a house. It offers very good insulation when combined with another material. It successfully resists warping caused by temperature fluctuations. Good sealing. Possibility of installing a storm door.

Cons: Wooden doors are quite costly and require maintenance to keep the doors in good condition. Moreover, wood is vulnerable to scratches and chips.

Aluminum front doors

To install an aluminum front door, you’ll need to spend between $2,400 and $4,200.

Pros: Aluminum doors are among the most popular options due to their aesthetic appeal and because they come in innovative shapes and models. In addition, they are very light, require little maintenance and don’t rust.

Cons: Aluminum isn’t very insulating unless equipped with a thermal break. It‘s not as solid as steel and is easy to scratch. Its difficult, if not impossible, to repair when damaged. Its high cost can also be a deterrent.

Cost of a garage door in 2024, by material

Several factors come into play when choosing a functional, safe and well-insulated garage door. But the price to pay is often what matters most.

Here’s a table showing the amounts for different options. You’ll also find advantages and disadvantages of the most popular materials below to facilitate your shopping.

Type of Garage Door

Cost per door (incl. installation/excl. motorized system)

Steel door +/- $2400 – $4800
Aluminum door +/- $3000 – $6000
Wood door +/- $7200 – $11,400

Steel garage doors

The cost of a steel garage door, including installation, ranges from $2,400 to $4,800.

Pros: Steel is a very solid material that resists weather conditions well (even more so than aluminum). This type of door is easy to install and maintain and is much more affordable than other types. There’s a wide choice of colours (including wood imitations). It can be repainted.

Cons: It has inadequate insulation. Therefore, it’s recommended to opt for a double-wall model for energy savings. Steel should be avoided near a body of water as it can rust. Maintenance every two years is also strongly recommended.

Aluminum garage doors

It costs between $3,000 and $6,000 to have an aluminum garage door installed.

Pros: Aluminum resists weather conditions, does not rust and has remarkable durability. It’s therefore suitable for houses located by the water or in humid areas. It’s perfectly suited to include a motorized system. Easy to install and maintain.

Cons: The high cost. Aluminum retains the cold even if a thermal break system is added so this material is not the best insulator. It resists shocks less than steel, hence the importance of choosing a textured finish.

Wood garage doors

A wood garage door costs between $7,200 and $11,500.

Pros: Wood is a thermal insulator that allows for energy savings. It also stands out for its aesthetics and warm appearance. There’s a wide variety of species, stains, colours and models.

Cons: A good quality wooden door is very expensive and isn’t suitable for motorized systems because of its weight. It’s affected by water and humidity, in addition to being half as insulating as steel. The warranty lasts between 1 and 2 years, depending on the manufacturer.

Types of garage doors

Sectional

Pros: A sectional garage door is the most popular model. It’s incredibly easy to maneuver and maintains a good fluid movement when opening and closing over the long term. It’s not cumbersome.

Cons: It’s more difficult to open if a power outage occurs and will have to be manually opened using an attached rope.

Roll-up

Below are the advantages and disadvantages for choosing a roll-up garage door for your home.

Pros: Ideal for businesses and mini-warehouses, the roll-up door is solid, durable, quiet and rust-resistant. It occupies a minimum of space inside the building when it is open. Requires little maintenance.

Cons: There is a lack of choice. It isn’t insulated.

Side-hinged

Pros: The swing door isn’t very expensive and doesn’t take up space inside the garage. The price fluctuates depending on the materials chosen.

Cons: Due to how it opens, it can’t be used on the roadside. Inadequate insulation.

Here is a table that gives an overview of the average prices for each type of standard size patio door. You’ll also find the advantages and disadvantages of each below.

Type of Patio Door (standard size)

Price per door (incl. installation)

PVC patio door +/- $2,640 – $4,560
Hybrid patio door +/- $3,300 – $5,220
Aluminum patio door +/- $3,600 – $5,400
Wood patio door +/- $3,840 – $5,760

PVC patio doors

The average price of a PVC patio door is between $2,650 and $4,550.

Pros: PVC is the most affordable and durable material. It requires very little maintenance and has excellent thermal capacity. Adapts to all types of weather conditions.

Cons: The thickness of the frame and the width of the chassis can sometimes detract from the door’s appeal. The choice of colours is limited.

Hybrid patio doors (PVC and aluminum)

Installing a hybrid patio door will cost you between $3,300 and $4,140.

Pros: This patio door benefits from the advantages of both materials: the insulating properties of PVC as well as the aesthetics and durability of aluminum. Resists extreme temperatures. Wide variety of colours for the metal exterior.

Cons: The price. However, it‘s still less than that of wooden or aluminum models.

Aluminum patio doors

An aluminum patio door costs between $3,600 and $5,400, including installation.

Pros: Modern and aesthetic material, resistant and rigid. Aluminum requires less maintenance than wood but more than PVC.

Cons: Aluminum is quite expensive. It’s a conductive metal, which does not perform well in terms of insulation. A thermal break system can be put in place to remedy this problem (additional costs to be expected).
